To access the cdrom when running slackware if you are not root you will need to do this: [ chmod 666 /dev/hdc ]
[ chmod 777 /mnt/cdrom ]
(this assumes that your cdrom is on hdc and is listed in fstab as /mnt/cdrom ) Be aware that this allows more liberal access to the hardware in your machine.
